What My Podcast Didn’t Prepare Me For

We spend years helping our children become confident and independent — but nobody quite prepares us for the moment they prove they no longer need us in the same way. One unexpected trip to the injury

The Day She Didn’t Need Us — And We Weren’t Ready

There’s something poetic — and slightly disorienting — about spending four weeks podcasting about helping teens prepare for independence at university… only to find out your own teen has already taken that leap.

This week, our daughter — newly licensed and fiercely proud after working so hard to pass her driving test — was out with her friend when she felt a familiar pain in her wrist. It’s the same one she fractured last year playing rugby.

  • They were driving past the injury unit.
  • They stopped.
  • They went in.
  • She got it checked out.
  • All without calling us.

All the things you hope they’ll do. All the decisions you want them to make. Calm, sensible, safe, and proactive.

But still — neither her dad nor I were ready for her to do it without us.

This moment landed just as I finished a four-part podcast series about exactly this transition — supporting teens as they build the confidence and competence to head off to university.

I’ve spoken openly on the podcast about how we build this independence step-by-step, but this week was the real-life test.

She passed.

We’re still catching our breath.

Of course we’re proud. She did everything right. But no one tells you that the goal of raising resilient, independent kids comes with this quiet ache — the sudden shift from being central to being on standby.

So here we are, a month before university begins, realising that the change isn’t coming.
It’s already happening.

To fellow parents going through the same — I see you. We’re raising them to not need us all the time… and when that day comes, it’s both everything we hoped for and more than we were ready for.

And to our daughter — thank you for reminding me that independence doesn’t just arrive. Sometimes, it drives itself straight to the injury unit and gets the job done.
