Anxiety: How to Support Without Feeding the Fear

Your child doesn't need you to make every worry disappear. They need you to help them discover they can cope.

Does your child constantly ask "What if?"

Do they need reassurance again and again, struggle with separation, complain of tummy aches or avoid things they used to enjoy?

Perhaps bedtime has become a battle, school mornings are difficult, or the smallest change in plans can lead to tears, anger or overwhelm.

And perhaps you're wondering...

  • Should I reassure them or am I making things worse?

  • Should I encourage them to face their fears or let them avoid things?

  • Why does nothing I say seem to help?

  • How can I support them without increasing their anxiety?

You're not expected to have all the answers. But you can learn a different way to respond.

That's exactly why I created the Primary Anxiety Toolkit.

What if we stopped trying to get rid of anxiety and started teaching children how to manage it?

Anxiety isn't the enemy.

It's your child's brain trying to protect them. Sometimes, though, that protective alarm becomes a little too sensitive.

And when that happens, even everyday experiences can feel overwhelming.

As parents, our natural instinct is to fix things, reassure our children or remove whatever is making them anxious.

But sometimes, without realising it, those loving responses can keep the anxiety cycle going.

The good news?

There are small, practical changes you can make that help your child feel understood, supported and increasingly confident in their ability to cope.

Connection before correction. Calm first. Think second. Build brave together.

What you'll learn

Inside the Primary Anxiety Toolkit, you'll discover how to:

Understand what's really happening when your child feels anxious

Meet the Guard Dog, Hippo and Wise Old Owl – our child-friendly Brain Team – and understand why your child can struggle to think clearly when their anxiety alarm is sounding.

Recognise anxiety in its different disguises

Anxiety doesn't always look like worry. Sometimes it looks like anger, controlling behaviour, meltdowns, avoidance or constantly needing to know what's happening next.

Break the reassurance cycle

Understand why repeatedly saying "You'll be fine" doesn't always help, and learn what to say instead.

Calm the body before trying to reason

Discover simple regulation techniques, including breathing, movement, grounding and connection, that you can practise together.

Help your child take brave steps without forcing them

Learn how to create a Brave Ladder, helping your child gradually approach difficult situations at a pace that's manageable for them.

Know when to problem-solve and when to let a worry pass

Use our Cloud Worries and Rabbit Worries approach to help children understand which worries need action and which thoughts don't need solving.

Support your neurodivergent child with understanding

Explore why sensory overload, executive functioning difficulties and environmental demands can sometimes look like anxiety, and why support must be adapted to the individual child.

Your child is aged 4–11 and:

  • Worries excessively or constantly asks "What if?"

  • Needs repeated reassurance

  • Struggles with separation, bedtime or school mornings

  • Avoids new experiences or things they previously enjoyed

  • Experiences tummy aches, tears, anger or overwhelm when anxious

  • Finds uncertainty or changes in routine difficult

It's also for parents who want to feel more confident supporting their child, whether anxiety is something new or has been part of family life for some time.

You don't need to wait until anxiety takes over family life to start making small, positive changes.

Meet Ashley Costello

Psychotherapist | Author | Founder of The Resilient Kid

I've spent 30 years working as a psychotherapist, supporting children, young people and families to better understand emotions, anxiety and resilience.

And one thing I've learnt is that children don't need perfect parents.

They need connected, emotionally safe adults who understand what's happening and can help them find their way through difficult feelings.

I created The Resilient Kid because I believe resilience isn't about never struggling.

It's about knowing what to do when you do.

This toolkit brings together the approaches I use in my work, making them accessible to parents who want practical strategies they can use at home.

My goal isn't to help you raise a child who never feels anxious. It's to help your child say, "I feel worried, AND I can do this."

Small changes in how you respond can make a big difference.

Imagine understanding why your child is asking the same question for the tenth time.

Imagine knowing what to say when their Guard Dog starts barking.

Imagine being able to support them through a difficult moment without immediately needing to fix everything.

And imagine your child beginning to discover:

"I was worried, but I managed it."

That's what we're working towards.

Not perfection. Not a worry-free childhood.

Just more understanding, more connection and more opportunities to build confidence and resilience.
